Cash, cards and ATMs in Sri Lanka: how to pay without the fees

ATMs, done right

1. Withdraw larger amounts less often. Each withdrawal carries a fee. Many machines give LKR 40,000–60,000 per transaction, and some up to LKR 100,000.
2. Get smaller notes. LKR 5,000 notes are hard to break in tuk-tuks and small shops, so ask for smaller ones at a bank counter, or spend big notes at supermarkets and hotels.
3. Tell your bank you’re travelling, so it doesn’t block your card, and make sure your PIN has four digits.
4. Check your notes. Hand torn or damaged notes back at the bank; shops may refuse them.

In Ella

There are ATMs on the main street and one at the railway station. Carry enough cash for the day’s tuk-tuks, tours and small cafés.

Changing money

The airport exchange counters and licensed money changers give fair rates; hotel desks usually give the worst. Never change money on the street. Keep your receipts if you want to change rupees back before you leave.

Service charge and tipping

Restaurants and hotels often add a 10% service charge. Beyond that, tipping is appreciated but not expected. Round up tuk-tuk fares if you like, and always tip in rupees.
