Little Adam’s Peak, Ella: the easy sunrise hike, step by step

Why go

Few walks anywhere give this much view for so little effort. From the top you look across to Ella Rock, south through the Ella Gap towards the plains, and down over tea estates on every side. The peak is named for its likeness to Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), the sacred mountain further west; this one is far smaller and far easier.

The route, step by step

  1. Out of town on Passara Road. From the main junction, follow Passara Road out of town. After about 500 metres you pass our door at No. 37.
  2. Turn right at Ella Flower Garden Resort. The lane climbs past guesthouses and tea. Or carry on along Passara Road and walk up through 98 Acres Resort, marked by a white Buddha statue; both routes meet at the trailhead.
  3. The trailhead. A large sign points to Little Adam’s Peak (sometimes “Mini Adam’s Peak”) and the Flying Ravana zipline. Follow the wide paved path through the tea.
  4. The steps. Concrete steps begin near the Ravana Pool Club entrance and climb the last few hundred metres.
  5. The top. The first summit has a small shrine and a Buddha statue. Walk on to the next knoll for the 360-degree view most people come for. A narrow dirt path continues along the ridge to quieter viewpoints; take it only in daylight, in shoes with grip.

The sunrise plan

  • Leave town about 75 minutes before sunrise: around 4:40 am from April to November, and around 5:00 am from December to March. A tuk-tuk to the trailhead saves 20–30 minutes.
  • Bring: a torch, water, a warm layer for the windy top, and shoes with grip. There’s no food at the summit, though a king coconut seller sometimes appears after sunrise.
  • Be patient: the sun clears the eastern ridges 15–20 minutes after official sunrise, and the best colour comes after that.
  • After rain: the path turns slippery and leeches come out, so leech spray helps.

Sunset instead?

It works, and it’s quieter, but cloud often builds in the afternoon. If you go late, start down before dark and carry a torch.

Stay safe, stay kind

  • The shrine on the first summit is a place of worship. Don’t climb on it, and don’t pose with your back to the Buddha statue; in Sri Lanka that is considered disrespectful.
  • Stray dogs often wait at the top; they’re usually friendly.
  • Take your rubbish back down with you.
  • Going alone is fine: the path is busy at sunrise, and locals are used to early walkers.

Combine it

  • The Flying Ravana zipline at 98 Acres and the Ella swing near Ravana Pool Club are on your way down.
  • The Nine Arch Bridge: back on Passara Road, a path marked “Nine Arches Bridge Path” on Google Maps starts close to the Ella Flower Garden Resort turn and reaches the bridge near its tunnel. Time it for the train at about 9:40 am.
  • Breakfast: our table is on your way back to town.
