Nine Arch Bridge, Ella: train times, the walk and the best light

Why it’s special

Completed in 1919, the “Bridge in the Sky” carries the railway on nine arches of stone, brick and cement, 91 metres long and 24 metres high. Railway engineer Harold Cuthbert Marwood designed it, and local labour built it under British supervision. Local legend credits a village builder, P. K. Appuhami, and says its steel went to the First World War; neither story is documented, but both live on.

Three ways to get there

  1. Along the railway line from Ella station (30–40 minutes). Walk east along the tracks; just before the bridge you pass through a short tunnel, so use your phone torch.
  2. Via Passara Road and the jungle path. Walk or ride along Passara Road (you’ll pass AK Ristoro at No. 37) to the Nine Arch Bridge turn-off, then follow the path down through trees and tea for 15–20 minutes.
  3. By tuk-tuk to the road above the bridge, then a short walk down. Agree the fare before you set off.

Since 20 June 2026, after cyclone repairs, two trains run each way between Nanu Oya and Badulla through Ella. When the Kandy section reopens, the full timetable should return, and we’ll update this table. Trains often run 30 minutes or more late: check the day’s times at Ella station, arrive early and enjoy the wait.

Photos and the best light

Come early for soft light and an empty bridge. The hillside café terraces give the classic side view; the track-side bank gives a low angle that shows the full height of the arches. Flying a drone? Check Sri Lanka’s civil aviation rules first.

Stay safe, stay kind

Trains cross slowly but cannot stop quickly. Step well off the tracks and the bridge when you hear the horn, never sit on the parapet, and take your rubbish home. After rain the jungle path is slippery, so wear shoes with grip.

Combine it

A path links the bridge with Little Adam’s Peak; ask locally for the current route. Many guests do the peak at sunrise, breakfast with us, then the bridge for the train at about 9:40.
